Northwood’s campus looks different this year following a series of renovations completed or started during summer 2026. The facilities team’s projects included replacing the Allyn Building’s roof, renovating parts of Bergamini Hall and improving faculty housing.

The Allyn Building (also known as Main) is receiving a new roof designed to withstand Lake Placid’s demanding winter conditions and address problems caused by the building’s aging roof and insulation.

“Although the new roof improves the building’s appearance, this project was first and foremost a necessary investment,” Head of School Mr. Gino Riffle said. “It will help prevent leaks, reduce heat loss caused by aging insulation and better protect the interior of the building.”

Riffle said Adirondack winters take a significant toll on campus roofs. He added that the replacement should reduce the time the facilities team spends responding to recurring problems.

Preparing the building for the roof replacement was one of the summer’s most demanding tasks, according to facilities director Mr. Scott Gregware.

“The most challenging was all the prep work for the roof replacement,” Gregware said.

Bergamini Hall, one of Northwood’s student dormitories, also received several improvements. The first-floor hallway was updated with wood-style flooring, while the building’s hot-water system, sinks and countertops were replaced. Repairs were also completed in the second-floor showers.

The facilities team also worked on several faculty apartments as more faculty members moved onto campus this year.

“We improved the exterior of one faculty apartment, completed work inside faculty apartments on Second East and First West, and fully renovated the faculty apartment on the second floor of Bergamini,” Riffle said.

“Some of these improvements were cosmetic, while others addressed significant needs that had been deferred for some time,” Riffle said. “With several faculty members moving on campus this year, the summer provided a timely opportunity to complete this work.”

Additional improvements are being considered for the future.

“We are also developing a longer-term plan to update faculty housing so that we can continue to offer appropriate and welcoming options for those who live on campus,” Riffle said.

Although the projects varied in size, each was intended to improve Northwood’s living and learning spaces. The renovations also reflected the facilities team’s ongoing work to maintain the campus.
