Originally from Skaneateles, New York, Colton Sommer ’27 is settling into his first year at Northwood. Sommer plays for the prep hockey team, and when he is not on the ice, he enjoys spending time with friends, playing poker, and golfing.
Sommer quickly developed friendships after arriving at Northwood.
“I only knew Colton was coming to Northwood and nothing else,” Kelly Matozzo ’28 said. “He immediately fit in and became one of my good friends.”
Sommer described his home life as energetic and fun. “Growing up around Skaneateles Lake has shaped my life,” Sommer said. “The lake in the winter meant skating with friends and playing shinny hockey. In the summer, it was waking up to surfing or swimming.”
Before attending Northwood, Sommer spent three years at Mount St. Charles Academy in Rhode Island. He said the sense of community he experienced during his first month at Northwood was stronger than what he had experienced during his three years at Mount St. Charles.
“One thing I saw at Northwood the day I toured was the togetherness everyone had,” Sommer said.

Sommer was already familiar with Northwood’s traditions and culture before arriving. His friend Casey Morrissey ’27 helped him understand what to expect.
“Casey is one of my good friends from home, and he told me about the culture here and the support from the community,” Sommer said.
During the summer before his senior year, Sommer committed to play NCAA Division I hockey at St. Lawrence University. Recruiting databases list him as a member of St. Lawrence’s anticipated 2028-29 recruiting class, meaning he is expected to play junior hockey before enrolling.
Sommer also has an interest in finance and hopes to study it in college. Looking further ahead, he would like to raise a family and work in the Boston area.
“I’m not sure what it is about Boston, but I love the area and the city,” Sommer said.
As Sommer completes his senior year, he hopes to continue developing as a hockey player and person while building friendships and contributing to the Northwood community.
