Outside Northwood’s windows, the fall colors have begun to fade, and the famous phrase of the series Game of Thrones is ever more present: Winter is Coming. As temperatures drop and leaves fall, the campus is beginning to feel the transition to winter. Mornings are getting colder, days are getting shorter and students are exchanging shorts and T-shirts for sweatshirts and sweatpants.
“It’s sad to see the beautiful fall colors disappear so quickly,” said Ray Peters ’27.
Walking to class in the morning has become colder, prompting students to bundle up. Before long, the first snowfall could cover the ground and change the appearance of campus completely.
Students have different opinions about the change in seasons. Some enjoy fall because of its mild weather and colorful leaves, while others look forward to winter and the arrival of snow. Students who have not experienced an Adirondack winter may need time to adjust to the colder temperatures.
As the weather gets colder, students begin looking forward to seasonal activities. Hockey, skiing and ice climbing are important parts of winter around Northwood and the Adirondacks. Meanwhile, outdoor activities popular during the fall begin to slow down as snow and freezing temperatures arrive.
“I loved being able to get outside in September and play Spikeball or throw a football,” Elliott Murch ’27 said.
Preparing the campus for winter is also important. Maintenance staff members must prepare for snow and ice, especially on the walkways students use throughout the day. When winter weather arrives, keeping those paths clear and safe becomes part of the maintenance crew’s daily routine.
With winter approaching, students are preparing for the colder months ahead. Between hockey, skiing and the first snowfall, the new season will bring a variety of activities to campus. Soon, Northwood’s colorful fall landscape will be covered with snow as another Adirondack winter begins.
