I was motivated to come to Northwood by the opportunity to build a high-level soccer program in a boarding school environment that supports elite athletes and rigorous academics. I like Northwood because it is a small community. The teachers, coaches, and players work closely together, and that is important for building a strong culture within a soccer program. Academics are important to me, obviously. The location is gorgeous. I love the mountains and the snow. We have the new indoor turf, so it will all fit nicely. Before Northwood, I worked with Mr. Maher at Berkshire for about 10 years.

I am from York Pennsylvania, and I’m 15. I came to this school for hockey and that’s the only reason. I also play tennis and golf, which I play at home with my parents. I have a dog named Cooper. He’s a swiss mountain dog and he’s two years old. I like Northwood, especially getting rowdy with the boys every night. All of them are beauties. I really hate how Northwood chooses to shut the WiFi down at 10:30 every night. It’s pretty rough. Im also am very tired from all the classes after a big weekend of hockey.

I am an 18-year-old senior at Northwood school. I play ice hockey, and I am thinking about going to college at Saint Lawrence, Clarkson or NC State, but Saint Lawrence is my #1 choice. I would like to pursue Business and finance with a minor in accounting to try and be an investment banker. I have a dog, a kitten, and two older cats. I like to build things. I built my own desk at home, I built a go-cart and I just built my own computer here.

I am from a city called Ma On Shan in Hong Kong. I came to Northwood because it is a great opportunity that I did not want to turn down. I miss a lot of things back home, like the foods I used to eat, my family and friends, and even my home culture. The culture here is much different than how it was back home. Even though it’s different than what I’m used to, I really like the small town of Lake Placid because it’s a place where a lot of people and tourists come to see the beautiful scenery.

I am from a small town right next to Paris called Marcq in France. I chose to come to Northwood because I wanted to explore and have the opportunity to be able to go to school in America. I do miss my routines, my family, and friends back at home. Since I arrived here at Northwood, I have had to get used to being able to see all of these trees and the mountains in the horizon, because back in France there aren’t many open areas with trees and mountains that you could see. My ultimate goal is to become a professional soccer player, and I believe being here at Northwood, where I can play soccer at a high level, will help me get closer to achieving my goal.

My name is Rachel Hinkley. I’m fifteen years old, a sophomore, and I’m from Swedesboro, New Jersey. I’m on Northwood Girls’ Hockey team. There are eighteen players, including myself, in my team, and we have a lot of fun together. We are all one big family. We’ve already had some practices and games. I can’t wait for the rest of this season! So far, the year has been going well. I like all of my teachers and students in my classes. When I’m not playing hockey, I enjoy hanging out with my friends and watching Netflix. My favorite Netflix show is The Walking Dead. I think that the opportunities that Northwood offers on weekends are amazing ways to meet new people who I normally don’t hang out with. For example, I went camping and cliff jumping with Mr. Dingle once, and it was a really fun experience that I don’t get to do too often. It was fun branching out to people outside the hockey team.

I was born and raised in Steamboat Springs, Colorado. I grew up skiing, kayaking, biking, and just being outside all the time. I got to live in Germany when I was in eighth grade. My mom grew up in Germany, so it was cool to be able to live with her side of the family instead of my dad’s like we do here in the U.S. It was a good experience to learn German at a school where I didn’t get graded or have homework. I came to Northwood as a sophomore last year. My dad got a job as the new ski coach, and I wanted to play elite level hockey, so everything worked out perfectly. I play forward in hockey. I rock climb and telemark ski as well. One of my favorite parts about Northwood is that I’m able to spend time outside climbing and skiing, while I can also play hockey at a high level. A lot of other schools wouldn’t allow me to do that.  My goal for the future is to play Division 1 hockey or even Division 3 if that’s more realistic. When I’m older, I want to get a job outside. I want to live in a van, travel the world, and see where life takes me.

My name is Rachel Rosner. I’m a junior and a day student. I’m originally from Carthage, NY, but I moved up to Lake Placid three years ago when I first came to Northwood. I repeated ninth grade at Northwood, but I think taking the extra year has really helped me prepare not only for college but also for the real world and life in general. It has also shaped me in a couple ways. Since Northwood is such a small community, I feel like everyone here is one big family. People have really encouraged me to come out of my shell, be more open, and express my beliefs.

I do a conglomerate of sports here. I rock climb, rec ski, and I actually started the equestrian team here at Northwood after two years of petitioning and driving my points home. The classes I’m taking this year are Honors Calculus, Honors Physics, AP Environmental Science, AP English Language, and Spanish IV/V. Everything is going really well so far, and I’m super excited to see what happens.
