Humans Of Northwood: Sara Donatello ‘18

“I’m from Lake Placid, NY. Northwood has been a part of my life for 5 years, so I guess saying 4 year survivor doesn’t do it justice. I like to think of myself as mature and a leader in the school. A lot of people call me sassy. I like being on the lake, swimming, laying in the middle of the water on a boat, listening to music and not having to think about a single thing. I came to Northwood because it seemed liked a perfect fit for me, especially since my dad works here. My favorite Northwood memory is probaby Winter Carnival, specifically broomball. It’s just such a great time around campus for everyone. I would probably tell my freshman self to stay on top of homework — seriously! But also, be more social. I’m not sure what exactly I want to do after Northwood, but I do know I want to go abroad. Studying abroad is just so interesting to me and I can’t wait to travel. I see myself living somewhere in Europe in 10 years.”

“I’m from Florida, USA. I like to sleep a lot, lay around, watch Netflix. I also like to deliver flowers for my aunt’s business. I eat a lot; that’s how I get out of the house. Every day I go out, get Chick-fil-a, and then go to the gym, of course. I came to Northwood because they didn’t have hockey down South. I would go back and tell my freshman self, “quit kidding yourself… you’re gay.” Seriously, I’d tell myself to study hard and get good grades because it’s really important. I want to play college hockey, and after I get my degree, I want to work with kids with disabilities. In 10 years, I see myself in Miami, laying on my boat with friends, listening to music, and being very happy.

The Huskies extended their five-game win streak this weekend by taking down the Cornwall Typhoons on Saturday morning. It was an all-around team effort as the Huskies faced many obstacles in the game. Injuries and SATs took a toll on the Huskies’ bench, causing a few plays to be out of the lineup. The girls persisted, winning the home game 4-2 in front of a big Family Weekend crowd.

Four different players tallied goals for the Huskies. Lexi Hooper (Forward, 2020) started the scoring early in the first. A few seconds later Keely Rose (Forward, 2018) buried a beautiful backdoor shot to put the Huskies up 2-0 only minutes into the game. Before the end of the first, Moe Tsukimoto (Forward, 2018) and Kendall Dubin (Forward, 2018) netted one apiece to extend the Huskies lead to 4-0. [Read more…]

Headmaster’s Council Looks to Make Changes to Study Hall

A member of the Council, Olivia Skriloff ‘18, said the goal was to “increase freedoms as students get older.” The idea that study hall needs to be reformed is an idea that has circulated the school for years, yet there has been no action. This year’s Headmaster’s Council has decided to take action, and convincing the Board would be no small task.

The Headmaster’s Council outlined why the current system should be changed. The base issue revolved around the school’s mission statement: “Northwood School fosters growth in young people so that they may engage their world and lead lives of consequence.” [Read more…]

Ashley Davis (Goalie, 2017 PG) and Olivia Skriloff (Goalie, 2018) combined for the shutout.

The following morning the Huskies faced off against the Vermont Shamrocks. Getting the first goal was a challenge for the huskies against a strong goaltender. It wasn’t until the end of the first that Kylie Kroes (Forward, 2018) was able to capitalize on a rebound to break the ice. Later on, Moe Tsukimoto (Forward, 2018) netted two more to raise the total to 3-0. Courtney Fairchild (Goalie, 2020) recorded the shutout.

After a short two hour break the Huskies were back on the ice to face off against St. Lawrence Steele. The girls ramped up the offense after falling down 0-1 early in the first. Sunday morning the Huskies took the ice for the championship game against the home team, the Vermont Shamrocks. Only seconds into the game Moe Tsukimoto (Forward, 2018) threw a shot five hole to immediately put the huskies up 1-0. From there on the Huskies took advantage offensively and put in six more for a 7-0 total. Moe Tsukimoto (Forward, 2018) added 3 more throughout the game, totalling at four. Marina Alvarez (Defense, 2021) got her first Northwood goal from the point, while Nikki Kendrick (Forward, 2018) and Keeley Rose (Forward, 2018) also added a goal apiece.
