Humans of Northwood: Ms. Leigh Getz

“I’m weird and uniquely myself, I wouldn’t change for anyone else. I would like to say that I’m pretty sassy but I’m not sure if that came with age. I’m from Clifton Park, NY. I went to public school until I completed my junior year and then jumped on the prep hockey bandwagon with all my teammates. Then I ended up at Canterbury for two years. I repeated my junior year, graduated in 2011, then applied early decision to Connecticut College. The most unique thing about me is probably the titanium rod in my right leg. I had two surgeries, one for my ACL and one for my leg break. I love to read, I like listening to podcasts, that comes with age too. I love being outdoors, which is one of the reasons I took the opportunity to move to Lake Placid. I obviously love what I do, teaching and coaching. Life happens when you least expect it. Ever since the summer of my junior year in college I wanted to be in an environment that was surrounded by both water and mountains. When this opportunity presented itself everything just fell into place and it was something I felt I couldn’t say no to. I was at a point where I felt I needed change and Northwood happened to be that change. It had everything I needed and more. I’m truly grateful for this new direction. To be honest, my favorite thing to do outside of coaching and teaching is connecting with friends I haven’t seen in a long time. Growing up, my teachers were my role models, my coaches were my role models, and I knew I wanted to teach since I was 11. So when I went to prep school I realized that I could have the best of both…and here I am! I don’t know where I see myself in ten years. We spend a lot of our lives projecting where were supposed to be and I feel like sometimes you just have to go with the flow.”

The puck dropped for the first game at 11am Saturday morning. The Selects came out of the gate strong, out-shooting the Huskies in the first, a trend that continued throughout the game. Within the last two minutes of the first, the Selects were able to put up two tallies. The intermission break gave the Huskies a chance to refresh and refocus. Thirty seconds into the second period. Sierra Benjamin (Defense, 2018) rushed the net and scored top shelf to cut the Selects lead in half. Despite the surge of energy from the Huskies, the girls were unable to come back, losing the game 1-2. Ashley Davis (Goalie, PG 2017) stopped 32 of 34 shots. [Read more…]
