Girl’s Hockey Struggles in Last Regular Season League Weekend

The Girls Hockey team traveled to Stanstead in late January to compete in their last regular season league weekend before playoffs, which take place February 23rd to 25th. Despite going into the weekend with the odds in their favor, the girls struggled top to bottom collecting only one win over the four-game weekend.

Kylie Kroes, Hanna Rose, Moe Tsukimoto, and Sierra Benjamin, all class of 2018, celebrate a goal during a recent game.

The first game was the most challenging of the bunch. After a long bus trip to Stanstead, the girls faced off against their league rivals in their home arena. Stanstead controlled the play from the drop of the puck, but the Northwood defense locked in holding the score 0-0 at the end of the first. Stanstead continued to control the pace into the second, when they were able to capitalize on the power play off a rebound, taking the lead 0-1. With less than a minute left in the second Stanstead was able to gain a 2 on 0 rush and scored five-hole extending their lead to 2. On the rush Ashley Davis (Goalie, 2017 PG) was injured and taken off the ice. Courtney Fairchild (Goalie, 2020) finished the game between the pipes. Despite Northwood having the offensive edge in the third period, the game remained 0-2.

The following morning the Huskies faced off against KES. Offensive opportunities continued to be a major challenge for the Huskies, as they spent another game trapped in their defensive zone. Within the first few minutes of the game KES was able to score two quick goals on major defensive breakdowns. The score remained 0-2, in favor of KES, through the second period. Midway through the third KES was able to capitalize on the power play to take the lead 0-3. Davis returned to play and posted the loss in net.

After a disappointing loss, the Huskies regrouped and found their offensive knack against Rice. In the beginning of the first period the play was spread even, yet Rice was able to score on rebound to take a 0-1 lead. It didn’t take long for the Huskies to settle in and out-perform the Rice offense. Just a minute later Kylie Kroes (Forward, 2018) evened the score 1-1 with a blocker side goal. It was just the beginning as on the next two plays Hannah Rose (Defense, 2018) scored two point shots back to back to increase the lead to 3-1. With only a few minutes left in the first Moe Tsukimoto (Forward, 2018) added a wrap-around tally to make the score 4-1 going into the second. The second period lended itself to more of the same. Nikki Kendrick (Forward, 2018) added two, and Keeley Rose (Forward, 2018) and Miranda Bookman (Forward, 2020) added one apiece to increase the lead to 8-1 going into the third. In the third period, Keeley Rose added her second of the game and Kendrick completed her hat trick with her third of the game, pushing the lead to an impressive 10-1. Davis posted the win in net.

The final game of the weekend showcased a rematch from the Northwood Invitational when the Huskies hosted RNS. Once again creating offensive chances challenged the Huskies from beginning to end, despite having many power play opportunities. There was little action in the first period as both teams seemed to take extra time to settle into the game. Midway in the second RNS struck on a rush to take the 0-1 lead. Play remained even as there were many penalties called against both teams. Late in the third RNS was able to capitalize on a similar shot extending their lead to two. Just a minute later RNS scored an empty net goal to seal their 0-3 win. Fairchild posted the loss in net.

With this weekend’s results, the Huskies move to 26-12-5 on the season.
