“Valentine’s Day was a day of love, passion and friendships as Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School celebrated Feb. 14, 2018 with carnations and teddy bears. It was not until nearly the end of the school day at around 2:30 p.m. that the lives of students and faculty were taken in a violent rampage of hatred.”

Second East First of Major Dorm Renovations

Sean Bunting ’19 relaxes in his newly-renovated dorm room on Second East.

Northwood School students are privileged to have a great environment to study; however, as the years pass, some parts of this environment inevitably become outdated. I interviewed Assistant Headmaster Tom “Brody” Broderick to learn more about the major renovations on the Second East boys residence hall, as well as future plans for renovations.

Northwood’s boys dormitories were last renovated twenty years ago, so they are very 90s-looking, or like Brody describes it, “It’s dated.” The current renovation will allow Northwood to attract the type of student the school wants. By giving the school a more modern feel it allows for more interest from applicants who visit the school. Brody said the purpose of the renovations is “to provide a cleaner and more modern living space that aesthetically fits the school.” [Read more…]

Humans of Northwood: Patrick Callahan’18

Callahan

“I’m 17 turning 18 in 2 months. I am a senior from Skaneateles, New York. This is my second year at Northwood. Following my time after Northwood I am looking to play junior hockey. I came to Northwood to play hockey, it is been a lot of fun playing for Coach Gilligan and Coach Cassidy, two of the best coaches I’ve ever had. During my time at Northwood School I definitely feel like I’ve grown as a person, become more independent, and able to take better care of myself. It is a great atmosphere, I love being able to go to school with all the boys and make memories. One my favorite things at Northwood is ripping Fortnite on Xbox with the boys. There is no bonding experience quite like it. It gets all the boys going and when the game is going on the room gets absolutely electric.”

Girls’ Hockey Splits 1-1 With Hill School at Home

TLP_0421

Senior Sierra Benjamin rushed the puck.

The Girls’ Hockey team hosted Hill School twice on their home sheet. Moe Tsukimoto’s (Forward, 2018) hat trick stole the first win but the Huskies struggled to string together a second game, ultimately splitting the weekend 1-1.

The first game took place Saturday night. The girls faced off against Hill School for the first time this season, in exciting comeback fashion. Hill started the game with a fast pace that took the Huskies by surprise. They controlled the puck in the Huskies’ defensive zone for the majority of the period, eventually capitalizing on the rush taking the lead 0-1. Just a few minutes later Hill struck again off a screen and tip in front of the net, extending their lead to 2-0. After a flat start, Tsukimoto was able to cut Hill’s lead in half and close the period out 1-2. Coming back on the ice for the second period the Huskies were able to even out the pace of the game. Tsukimoto collected her second of the game off of her own rebound to tie the game 2-2. The third period remained scoreless as both goaltenders held strong. As overtime began Hill took back control of the play yet the Huskies prevailed. Off a rebound from Ashley Davis (Goalie, 2017 PG) Tsukimoto collected the puck and scored blocker side on a breakaway to win the game 3-2. Davis posted the win in net.

Less than 12 hours later the puck dropped again. This time the Huskies were stronger from the start but small defensive breakdowns proved to be too much to overcome. After controlling the puck in the Huskies’ defensive zone for a few minutes Hill was able to strike first and take the lead yet again, 0-1. They held their lead into the second period until Aimee Headland (Forward, 2019) scored backdoor tying the game at 1. Just a few minutes later a defensive breakdown led to a breakaway and Hill was able to regain their lead, pushing the score to 1-2. The third period started with Hill scoring a weak goal that extended their to 1-3. The remainder of the period played out until the final minutes when Madison Novotny (Defense, 2021) scored her first Northwood goal from the point. In the final minute of play the Huskies pulled the goalie for the extra skater but the effort wasn’t enough. Hill scored an empty net goal to finish the game 2-4. Davis posted the loss in net.

With this weekend’s results, the Huskies move to 27-13-6 on the season. Next weekend, the Huskies have two games against New Jersey prep Hill School.

The Huskies started the game strong and overcame the adversities of injured players and a long bus trip. The girls outplayed Lawrenceville from the start and were able to strike once in the first period. Lexi Hooper (Defense, 2020) scored blocker side to take the lead for the Huskies 1-0. Midway through the second, Lawrenceville was able to tie the game up 1-1 on a rush. Going into the third, the Huskies had the offensive lead and continued to push hard towards the Lawrenceville net. Despite maintaining control, Lawrenceville was able to capitalize on their power play and take the lead with just under 10 minutes remaining. Eight minutes later, Keeley Rose drew a penalty and the Huskies tied it up on the power play. Moe Tsukimoto (Forward, 2018) scored off a Sierra Benjamin (Defense, 2018) feed in front to knot the game at 2-2. Neither team could find the back of the net as time expired. Courtney Fairchild (Goalie, 2020) saved 13 of 15 shots in the tie.

With this weekend’s results, the Huskies move to 26-12-6 on the season. Next weekend, the Huskies have two games against New Jersey prep Hill School.

Is the Dawn of Soccer the End of Hoops at Northwood?

While Northwood School’s admissions team is recruiting student-athletes for the school’s new elite travel soccer team next school year, current students are starting to see changes to the facilities, including a new lighting system in what for decades has been known as the indoor tennis courts. Soon the concrete surface of the tennis courts will be covered in artificial turf, on which the soccer team will train. But this development brings questions: what will happen to basketball and tennis at Northwood? Both programs rely on the soon-to-be turf field for training. [Read more…]
