“BRunyon” from a Student’s Eyes

Like an ancient oak that stretches towards the sun, B Runyon unfolds himself from his chair, his head growing close to the ceiling light. The artificial shine highlights his hair, creating a slight halo effect, crowning his head like a treetop canopy. His eyes glisten soft and cool, mirroring the sky. Runyon rolls up his sleeves and exposes his weather-beaten skin, reminiscent of rough bark: hands like the underside of leaves, veins that travel wobbly paths toward his heart. As he talks, his lanky arms hang awkwardly by his side, shoulders slumped wearily.

The Junior hockey team got off to a 2-0-1 start competing in New Hampshire against NEFPL (New England Fall Prep League) competition. In the first game Wyatt Wilmshurst (Forward, 2017) struck for both goals and Matt Petizian (2017) was solid in net as the Huskies skated to a 2-2 tie.

In game two, the boys prevailed 5-1 with Wilmshurst, Aleksi Peltonen (Forward, 2017), Kaden Pickering (Forward, 2017), scoring goals, and Simon Morberg (Forward, 2017) burying two. P.O. Marchand (2017) made 17 stops to secure his first junior team win. [Read more…]

Restaurant Review: Lake Placid Pub and Brewery

The Lake Placid Pub and Brewery (Photo provided)

In my three weeks in Lake Placid, I have already eaten at The Lake Placid Pub and Brewery (affectionately knows as “The Pub”) twice. The Pub provides not just great food, but also a great setting for a meal.  It offers both inside and outside seating.  Inside has a great classic sports bar feel. Even though outdoor dining is limited when Northwood is in session, scenery is beautiful.  You can sit outside and enjoy quality food while overlooking Mirror Lake, and beyond the lake, the mountains.

What is your job here at Northwood?
I am the head 16U boys hockey coach as well as the boys hockey recruiting director.

What brought you to Northwood?
A couple of reasons. I am local, born and raised in Saranac Lake. I attended Northwood from 2000-2003. I had an opportunity in 2008 to come back, and I coached hockey here and did the recruiting for 5 years. Then I had the opportunity to be the head coach at the collegiate level at SUNY Canton for 3 years. I then had a chance to come back to Northwood and take over the 16U program, and I jumped all over it. I value developing hockey players, and being able to work with elite teenagers was something that was very intriguing to me.

What made you pick your career?
I’ve been involved in sports my whole life. My dad was a gym teacher and a hockey coach. Every dinner table conversation had something to do with sports. I was able to play in college for 4 years, and I knew that after college I wanted to get myself back into the sports world, and coaching just seemed like a natural fit for me. [Read more…]

I am the 10th grade world history teacher, the girls assistant hockey coach and girls assistant lax coach.

What brought you to Northwood?
After graduating college I decided to move in Lake Placid. I always wanted to coach hockey, and a position opened up here at Northwood. It is like the best of both worlds, being able to teach and coach at the same time.

What made you pick your career?
I was born into a teaching family. I have always enjoyed working with kids. I have worked with a lot of younger groups coaching hockey, and this is my first time being in a high school environment. [Read more…]

What is your job here at Northwood?
Head coach of the boys prep hockey team and in the mornings I work at admissions and also I am the strength and conditioning coach of all three boys hockey teams throughout the year.

What brought you to Northwood?
I would say the environment and the coaching aspect for hockey. It was kind of a no brainer when I was looking at different school to choose Northwood, between the mountains the rivers the town and just coming here to see it first-hand and meeting the people…those four characteristics, would beat out every school I would say.

What made you pick your career?
I always wanted to work at a boarding school. I went to boarding schools as a junior and senior, and those were the best years of my life, so I always wanted to get back into that environment when I was done playing. It was a win-win for me because I get to coach and be on the ice every day and help young players like I was helped. [Read more…]

What is your job at Northwood?
I am the Director of Admission and Financial Aid.

What brought you to Northwood?
As Mrs. D’Arco and I learned about Northwood through last winter and early spring, it became very apparent that Northwood is a place that has not only a tremendous history, but will also have a great future.

What made you pick your career?
Both of my parents were teachers and my sister is a teacher as well, so getting into education seemed natural, and I love the experience I had as a boarding school student.

Students United in Disdain for Presidential Candidates

Northwood students dislike both major party candidates. Source: Forbes

With the upcoming presidential election, the United States faces a divide in opinions more extreme than it has been in many years. Those who support a candidate seem to support that candidate very stubbornly and are nauseated to hear the name of the opposing candidate. Right now, young people in the US do not support either candidate, but rather have disdain for either Trump or Clinton and would vote for the other simply to keep the one they do not like out of office .
