Dorm Room Single: Berg vs. Main

Northwood offers several styles of dorm rooms across campus. The West dormitories house female students, while the East dormitories and Bergamini house male students.

Single rooms in the Main Building can be very different from those in Bergamini. Ryan Demers ’27 and Jackson Marchione ’27 both live in single rooms, but their rooms are located in different buildings.

Demers’ room in the Main Building was designed for one person, making it difficult to accommodate a second resident. Marchione’s room in Bergamini was originally designed for two students, so it has two beds and two closets.

“It’s nice to be alone sometimes, and I can do what feels comfortable for me without it bothering a roommate”, Demers said.

Marchione also appreciates having time alone but enjoys welcoming other students into his room.

“I like being by myself sometimes, but my favorite thing is when people come and ask me question or just want a place to come hang out”, Marchione said.

The rooms also have different closets. Demers’s room has a closet with a door and more storage space than some closets in Bergamini. Although Marchione’s closet is smaller, his room is larger than Demers’s.

The beds and desks provide another difference. In Bergamini, lofted beds allow students to place a desk or dresser underneath, creating additional floor space. Beds in the Main Building are not lofted, so students must arrange their desks and dressers around them.

Both locations offer advantages. A single room in the Main Building provides convenient access to the center of campus life, although the building can become loud and busy in the afternoon. Bergamini generally offers a calmer environment during the day.
