On Tuesday, Oct. 13, Northwood students and faculty members will take a break from their regular academic schedules to participate in Mountain Day. The school tradition gives students an opportunity to explore the Adirondack Park, challenge themselves outdoors and spend time with members of the community.
“Mountain Day is one of Northwood School’s longest-standing traditions”, Director of Northwood Adventure Sports Mr. Bobby O’Connor said. “It celebrates adventure, community and exploration in the Adirondack Park now for the 48th year”.
Students and faculty members will be assigned to groups and sent to different trails across the Adirondack Park. The experience allows students to spend time with classmates and teachers outside their usual school environment.
For many students, Mountain Day is also an opportunity to meet people from different grades and athletic programs.
“Mountain Day is a good time because you get to know new people from different ages and sports”, Richard Szekely ’27 said. “You also get to experience the outdoors and the beautiful view when you reach the peak”.
Each group will face a different challenge based on its assigned destination and the trail’s difficulty.
“Regardless of the destination or difficulty, every Mountain Day outing shares the same purpose: to challenge students, encourage teamwork, foster meaningful connections and develop a deeper appreciation for the outdoors”, O’Connor said.

For new students, Mountain Day offers an opportunity to experience the Adirondacks and develop relationships within the Northwood community.
“I think it’s going to be a fun day, but also very tiring, depending on the mountain I’m assigned to”, David Waiss Agami ’29 said. “I also think it’s going to be a great opportunity to meet new people and make some friends”.
Beyond hiking, Mountain Day gives students a chance to step away from their normal routines and learn about the environment surrounding Northwood.
“At the end of the day, success isn’t measured by the elevation gained or the summit reached, but by the experiences shared, the challenges overcome and the connections made along the way”, O’Connor said.
With fall colors surrounding Lake Placid, Mountain Day will once again bring the Northwood community together in the Adirondack Park.
