First-Time Skiers Enjoy Whiteface

Students and faculty came back to a winter wonderland after Thanksgiving break. Lake Placid got 20 inches of fresh snow while students were away. With Whiteface open for the season and abundant snow to ski, many students took advantage of the opportunity, including several first-time skiers.

Director of Multicultural Affairs, soccer coach and Spanish teacher Mr. Kelvin Martinez and junior Eric Swartz skied for their first time on Tuesday, November 27th and had lots to say about their new experience.

Mr. Martinez really enjoyed skiing, despite it being his first time on skis. He says that he took the Gondola, the most popular lift at Whiteface, which goes to the top of the mountain. “It took a while to get down, but less than halfway through I got the hang of it. It was a phenomenal experience. I am definitely going again, hopeful every weekend this winter,” he said.

Eric Swartz ‘20 said his first experience was “interesting.” Eric went up the gondola just like Mr. Martinez and felt scared the first time up. He says “I fell about twenty-five times, maybe thirty. By the third day, I was able to get down the hill from the Gondola without falling. Now I find skiing very enjoyable.”
