Soccer Teams Have Strong Showing at GPS

After the Thanksgiving break, the Black Rock Residential Academy at Northwood School had the important well known Global Premier Soccer (GPS) Thanksgiving Showcase in Boston. The GPS Thanksgiving Showcase features 400 teams and is a major recruiting event for college coaches. Before the showcase, players were all around the US enjoying their break and had to travel to Boston and meet their teammates.

Shortly after the whole team was reunited the U17 and U19 teams separated. They both played in the same showcase but in different categories and in different locations. The teams both played three games.

The U17 team won 2 games and lost 1

The U17 had a rough start where they lost 0-1 against GPS All-Stars in their first game of the weekend.

They won the second game 6-0 against Western Pioneers. Goals were scored by Connor DeAngelis ‘22, Tonio Chan ‘20, Marco Wong ‘20, each with one. Arnezha  Astwood ‘21 tallied three goals.

They won the third game won 2-1 against Boston Bolts to end the weekend with a positive result. Alvaro Garcia ‘21 and Astwood scored.

The U19 team won 2 games and lost 1

The U19 also had a hard start of the weekend losing to Liverpool NPL 2-1. Matias Valenzuela ‘19 scored the lone goal for Northwood.

In the second game, they won 6-0 against Rochester FC. Valenzuela, Inaki Rodriguez ‘19, Fran Castillo ‘19, and Mark Keiffer ’19 each scored a goal and Pedro Paggi ’19 scored twice.

Northwood topped GPS Phoenix in the third game to complete the weekend first in their group. Valenzuela scored for the Huskies.

The team ended their fall season ranked second in the nation.
