16U Team Falls Just Short of Nationals

tlp_4818

(March 10-12, 2017) The boys 16U hockey team had a solid showing at states, but fell just short of earning a berth to the USA Hockey National Championships.

In game one the Huskies faced off against the hometown Buffalo Regals. Despite powerplay goals from Will Arquiett (Forward, 2019) and Pat Callahan (Forward, 2018) Northwood suffered a tough 3-2 overtime loss, but earned 1 point from the game.

As a result of the OT loss, game two was a must-win against a scrappy Syracuse Stars team.  Northwood controlled play from the start, but had trouble beating the Stars goaltender.  The Huskies continued to battle and netted two goals securing a 2-0 victory behind a Verneri Virtanen (2019) shutout.

A game three win against the Westchester Express, whom Northwood tied earlier on in the season, was another must in order to secure a trip to nationals. The Huskies came out flying and jumped on the Express early, forcing them to take penalties, but Northwood couldn’t capitalize on their power play chances.  Northwood held a 2-1 advantage heading into the 3rd period, behind goals from Pat Callahan (Forward, 2018) and Sean Bunting (Forward, 2019).  A Westchester goal early in the third knotted the game at two, and Westchester took the lead with less than 10 minutes to go.  Northwood pushed back, but failed to score and tie up the game.

The loss meant the end of the season for the 16U team. Head Coach Trevor Gilligan said, “It was a tremendous season, with lots of mental and physical growth and development.  I couldn’t be more proud of the consistent effort each member put in throughout the year.  It is certainly a team, and season, that I will look back on and smile.”

Northwood Students Have Much to Do in the Winter

There is no reason for Northwood students to hibernate during a Lake Placid winter. Northwood School offers co-curricular activities such as skiing and ice climbing. The village of Lake Placid and the surrounding area provide a lot of options as well.

Many Northwood Connections in the Peltonens’ Route to Wisconsin

Aleksi and Jesper Peltonen (both class of ‘17) are two Finnish brothers who have played on the Northwood Junior hockey team for three years. In 2014 they moved from Helsinki, Finland to Lake Placid to pursue their goal of playing Division I college hockey in the United States. With lots of hard work and patience, both brothers are set to accomplish their dream with their January 16th announcement of their commitment to attend and play hockey at University of Wisconsin in the fall of 2018. Student Safety at Center of Fire Drill Protocol

It’s widely known at Northwood School that we take fire safety seriously here because our buildings are made out of wood. When there is a fire drill or a fire alarm everybody has to evacuate all school buildings and gather at the assigned meeting place on the field.

Famous 1980 Scoreboard Comes Down

The famous Lake Placid scoreboard that was used in the 1980 Olympic hockey game between the powerhouse Soviet Union’s Red Army hockey team and the young United States Olympic hockey team has been taken down. February 6th was the last time that the scoreboard was in use. The scoreboard update is a part of a number of modern upgrades to the facility that the Olympic Regional Development Authority hopes will allow the venue to attract major sporting events.

Perspective: The Four Year Survivor

The term “four year survivor” is used at Northwood to describe anyone that has gone to our school from freshman year to graduation. At a school where the majority of the senior class enrolls for their junior year, this is a special occurrence. In my graduating class, there are ten four year survivors. Seniority, a type of social ranking that increases the longer you’ve been at Northwood, makes being a four year survivor much better.
