Huskies Have Strong Showing at League Championship

NAPHA.JPGAfter a week-long winter vacation, the Northwood Huskies met in Buffalo, NY to compete in the NAPHA championship weekend. The team hadn’t done as well as it would have liked in the regular season of the league, so they had to “play-in” on Friday night to make it in the tournament. They faced off against Trinity College, a team that had beaten the Huskies twice in regular season play.

A Day in the Life: Beckett Ledger

In most sports, training techniques will change with the seasons. In the sport of Nordic combined- which combines the thrill of ski jumping and the endurance and challenge of skate skiing, training is very similar in all seasons. The artificial jumping surfaces allow us to train exactly the same way in the summer as in the winter and a cleanly paved road works well for roller skiing. The major things that will change with the addition of snow are the amount of competitions and traveling as well as the effort to fit school in with all this training.

Since each day is different for training, I will take you through a week of my training schedule (where I would not be traveling or competing at all).

At Northwood, Mondays are a day off, so the most I will do on a Monday is go for a small run and stretch.

Tuesdays, I go to the weight room at the Olympic Training Center to improve strength, balance, agility and flexibility. To start, I will warm up on the bike for 10 minutes, followed by about 15 minutes of static stretching and 4 different dynamic workouts with just a normal bar. Then it is right to the agility ladder where the emphasis is on not only being fast but also precise. Next, the lifting begins. Since ski jumping is performed with mainly the legs, the focus of every workout is on the legs, with a good amount of core exercises mixed. Just like in most sports, the core is a crucial part, providing extra stability. Some upper body work is mixed in as well for the cross country skiing part but it is not quite as important as the legs. This workout is followed up by another 10 minutes of spinning on the bike and 10 minutes of stretching.

During the winter, the training on Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays depends on the weather. If it is too warm, we cannot jump because the track on the in-run has to be ice. When it is too warm, I will skate ski on Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays, with one day of easier skiing as an endurance session, one day of short intervals (going as fast as possible for 30 seconds then easy for 30 seconds 10 times) and one day of longer intervals (going fast for 5 minutes then easy for 5 minutes 3 times). However, if it is cold enough to jump, Wednesdays I will usually go for an easy ski or run in the morning before classes then jump (4-5 jumps) in the afternoon during my off periods. Then on Fridays I will jump (5-6 jumps) after classes and Saturdays I will jump (5-6 jumps) in the morning and do mid-length intervals on skate skis in the afternoon.

On Thursdays, I am in the gym again. This time I am focusing on explosiveness, flexibility, balance and awareness. The warmup will be the same as on Tuesdays with spinning and stretching, but the lifting will be traded out for plyometrics. During the winter, the emphasis is more on maintaining the fast twitch muscles that were developed over the summer. Most the exercises are based around hurdles- 4 hurdles in a row (jumping off two feet), jumping over a hurdle from a squat on balance discs and jumping over a hurdle from a moving roller board. Some of the exercises incorporate bungees that hook to the top of a squat rack or the floor. These bungees either help you jump higher or pull you down with more resistance, both forcing you to be aware of where your body is. After this, a cool down on the bike and stretching again.

Unfortunately, I have not been able to follow this schedule as closely as I would have liked so far this winter due to the weather, but there is nothing I can do about that. However, I have been able to have some awesome experiences all over the world in places that do have enough snow like Colorado, Utah, Slovenia, Poland and Norway.

Sustainable Building Design – An Independent Study

I began the Certificate in Sustainable Building and Design at the Yestermorrow Design/Build School in Waitsfield, Vermont during the spring of 2015. I have completed the required three-week course at Yestermorrow and I am currently completing the additional 18 days of electives during this academic year. As part of this Certificate, I am undertaking a practicum project and independent study at Northwood School.

The goal of this project is to design a theoretical outdoor learning environment for my school with community involvement. The location of the potential design is an underutilized and disconnected area of my school campus that is centered around an outdoor pavilion.

The proposed location of the design is an underutilized and disconnected area of campus that is centered around a rustic outdoor pavilion. Although this area has an unimproved feel and does not provide people the opportunity to respond to any type of spatial organization, the pavilion is a nice addition to the campus. While it is not currently integrated with daily campus life, the site is no farther away from the main building than other campus facilities. The usage issue is not a matter of distance, but rather a perceived feeling of separation. The potential project site features a pavilion surrounded by an unimproved open space. This site is separated from the main campus and hidden behind a row of young trees that block visibility. While the pavilion includes picnic tables and a fireplace, there is little motivation by the community to regularly use this space.

There is genuine interest and curiosity about this project as evidenced through informal conversations and community review of five conceptual design boards that were posted in the Northwood Lobby. While Northwood enjoys a great sense of community, this part of campus could potentially serve as a catalyst to bring the school together through more frequent and healthy interactions: social, athletic, and academic. My goal for this project is to create a forum that brings community members together to create a theoretical sustainable environment that is truly responsive to its wants and needs.

My learning objective for this project is to increase my understanding and appreciation of sustainable building and design best practices while gaining a number of valuable skills. Specifically, I will learn how to engage a community, develop a design process and procedure, create a website, develop a presentation, facilitate meetings, and hone my collaboration and research abilities. In addition to these tangible skills, I will learn how promoting a deeper connection between a community and the design process to create a sustainable environment that is responsive to community needs can be integrated into a larger vision.

The Northwood Girls’ hockey program had another successful weekend, playing 4 games and going 1-1-2. Northwood White traveled to Troy, NY to play in the 16U Meltdown, while the Blue team stayed home and faced The Hill School in a two game series.

In addition to the busy hockey schedules, the girls also took part in a team building activity to make their own skills video. The videos were screened on Monday afternoon and blended talent, humor, and creativity. Here’s one example…check our Facebook page for the links to others!

The Mirror’s (Short) Year-in-Review

Nikita

Editor-in-Chief Nikita Tafazoli ’16

The Mirror, Northwood School’s student-led newspaper, was relaunched in November by editor-in-chief Nikita Tafazoli ’16. The Mirror has only had two monthly editions in its new format, but the paper has been getting a lot of attention.

By far the most popular article has been Dillon Smith’s story about Northwood’s recent acquisition of two properties. The Mirror beat all other news outlets to the story, and Dillon’s piece was shared widely on Facebook.

It’s the season of year-end lists. Here’s a list of The Mirror‘s most-read stories and contributors:
