Starting off the weekend against the York Skipjacks, the Huskies were ready for the defensive battle. As the game began, both teams got excellent scoring opportunities. However, neither was able to find the back of the net throughout the first two periods of the game. With the third period starting, both teams were eager to break the tie and score the first goal of the weekend. The battle continued without any goals, sending the game to overtime. Once overtime began, Northwood had full control of the puck. Ray Fust ‘21 scored to get the first win of the weekend.

The following morning, Northwood faced off against Honeybaked, a team from Detroit, MI. Honeybaked struck first, scoring nine minutes into the first period. Responding shortly after were the Huskies as they scored just a few minutes afterward. With the second period starting in a tie, the lead was up for grabs. About halfway through the second period, Honeybaked retook the edge. As the game went on, the Junior team couldn’t find a way to respond, leaving them with a loss of 2-1.

That night, the Junior team matched up against the New Hampshire Jr. Monarchs. Getting off to a good start was Elijah Devereaux ‘20, who found the back of the net midway through the first period. Northwood held the Monarchs to no goals through the first, leading the game heading into the second. The lead did not last long, however, as the opponent scored. A quick response came from Mark Monaco ‘21, who gave the team the lead again. Right before the end of the second period, New Hampshire tied the game after two periods of play. As the battling went on through the third period, the Monarchs scored four unanswered goals with just minutes left in the game. Fust scored a goal, but it wasn’t enough. The Junior team fell to a final of 6-3.

In the final match of the weekend, the Huskies faced the Junior Bruins. As the game began, Northwood got off to a great start by scoring three goals and shutting down the other team. Maintaining the solid play, Northwood dominated the game and scored two more goals. With about five minutes left, the Bruins scored their first goal of the game. The Juniors responded quickly by a goal from Fust. Northwood ended the game at 6-2 and the weekend with a record of 2-2.

An optional study hall Thursday evening brought out a large crowd of students to support the team in their first game. Getting off to a good start, Northwood would take advantage of their first power play of the weekend with a goal by Ray Fust (2021, Forward). Neither team would score for the rest of the period making the score 1-0 after one. That would be the score until about halfway through the second when Standstead scored a goal of their own to tie the game at one. Both teams would get many scoring opportunities in the final minutes of regulation time, but neither of them could score for the rest of the game or overtime, sending the game to a shootout. As the shootout went on, Northwood could not find the back of the net, and Stanstead took the first game of the weekend, with a final score of 2-1.

The next day, the Huskies were eager to settle the score with Stanstead. The first period was scoreless as the first lead of the game was up for grabs going into the second. Nate Boak (Defensemen, 2020) put Northwood on the board first with a shot from the blue line. That would be the only goal for the rest of the game until Daniel Colabufo (Forward, 2020) put the game away with a one-timer from the slot. With a two-goal lead, just minutes before the game was over, Northwood would shut out Stanstead to take home a win and go 1-1 on the weekend.

[Takeover] Tuesdays are for the Students

Screen Shot 2019-10-17 at 3.10.12 PMEvery Tuesday, Northwood students get to live a day in the life of another student. A student takes over Northwood’s Instagram account and posts stories throughout the day “to show what it is like to be a student here at Northwood,” according to Ms. Darcy Norfolk, Northwood’s Marketing and Communications Director.

I participated in Takeover Tuesday two weeks ago. When I first learned that I would have to publicly share what I do on a typical day, I was a little nervous. However, it was actually easy to find things to post. Starting with a post at breakfast with my friend Patrick Doyle ‘20, I uploaded a short video of myself in Journalism and pre-practice preparations with my teammate Nate Boak ‘20.

Takeover Tuesday not only allows current students to get to know their classmates better, but it also gives prospective students an opportunity to experience Northwood life before visiting campus.

With Takeover Tuesday successfully integrated into the school’s social media program, Northwood Marketing now looks forward to introducing another initiative called Faculty Friday. Also, some of the future participants of Takeover Tuesday will be able to go live on Instagram, which will make the program more engaging for the viewers. “We welcome outside feedback on what else people want to see,” said Ms. Norfolk.

New Students Take on Northwood Orientation

New students arriving at Northwood School for the opening of school experienced various types of emotions. They were nervous, worried, and excited for the next chapter in their life away from home.

A typical orientation at a high school is simply going to school, getting your schedule, and then leaving. But at Northwood, students go through a lot more. First, they attend registration, collecting stamps on their checklists after talking to the Dean of Academic Affairs, the Director of Athletics, the Director of Technology, the school nurse, and so on. Then, they move into their dorm rooms. This means that the time for them to say goodbye to their parents is getting closer, which can be exciting, since they will be on their own, but also sad since they won’t be able to see their family for a long time.

As new students settled into their new home, the warm and welcoming community at Northwood gave comfort to many of them. Jack Schlifke ‘20 said, “I really liked how tightly knit the school was.” Marie-Jeanne Prince ‘22 said, “I felt welcomed, like a part of a community.”

Mixed emotions carried on throughout the rest of the orientation. “My parents have done everything that they could do for me my whole life, and it was definitely a little weird seeing them go home after orientation,” Schlifke said. Waking up to the ringing of your alarm clock instead of the yelling of your parents — “You’re gonna be late. Get up!” — may seem daunting at first, but learning to become more independent is one of the many advantages of going to a boarding school.

To help new students fit in, Northwood organized several days of activities for orientation. By the end of the week, the new students felt more comfortable since they were able to meet a lot of new people.

With the season starting the Junior Team looked to get off to a good start when they traveled to Clifton Park, NY to faceoff against CP Dynamo in their first test of the year. Starting the game scoreless through the first period. Northwood finally broke the seal and got their first goal of the year, scored by Ray Fust (Forward, 2021). Keeping CP Dynamo from scoring in either of the first two periods, the team went into the locker room to prepare for the third period. Throughout the third period, Northwood looked solid as they locked down CP Dynamo. Until the eight-minute mark in the third period when a CP Dynamo player scored off of a rebound to tie the game at one. As the last period went on neither team could find the back of the net, leaving the score tied at the end of regulation. Going into overtime, Northwood was ready to bring home their first victory of the year. Unfortunately, CP Dynamo would find the back of the net first and Northwood fell by a final score of 2-1.

After coming off a tough loss the night before, the junior team looked ready to respond on their first home contest of the year. Getting off to a quick start with a one-time goal from Jacob Guevin (Defenseman, 202.) the team looked ready to take control. The score would stay 1-0 through the first period as Northwood controlled the play. Having 3-4 scoring chances early in the second period, Northwood was knocking on the door to expand their lead. But CP Dynamo had their chances as well and scored four in the second period to make the score 4-1 going into the third. Coming out of the locker room to start the third the junior team was ready to take the game to CP Dynamo and close the deficit as much as they could. Throughout the period Northwood was getting their chances, but they couldn’t finish them until Mark Monaco (Forward, 2021) scored midway through the final stanza. Getting that goal gave the team some confidence and hope but there would not be enough time and CP Dynamo scored an empty net to put the game out of reach at a final score of 5-2.
