Two-Factor Authentication Comes to Northwood

The return from winter break marked a new era for Northwood’s online security with the launch of Duo, a two-factor authentication program that requires Northwood users to authenticate on their phone when they login to Microsoft products like Teams, Office, and Outlook.

Two-factor authentication is the simplest, most effective way to make sure users really are who they say they are. The program Duo was added to prevent the hacks widely reported at government, university and business  and to ensure more reliable and safer online experience for Northwood students and staff.

Duo is used in schools, companies or organizations wishing to have enhanced cybersecurity. The program ensures security by asking the owner of the device to accept access into their personal accounts every time they log in. For the Northwood community this is used whenever a student or faculty member uses their Outlook or Teams app. For example, if a student opens Outlook, Duo will redirect them to their app and ask if they are the one trying to access Outlook. Upon approval, the student can go back to their email and continue safely. The Duo app is found in the Apple App Store or on Google Play and can be linked easily with students’ Northwood accounts.

Northwood’s Technology Director Jeffrey Martin managed the launch of Duo at Northwood. “As part of our security overhaul, we upgraded our MFA platform to Duo Security. Duo is very secure, reliable and easy to use.” Martin thinks Duo is well-suited for Northwood’s needs. “It also offers a flexible approach that allows us to better support our diverse student body both on campus and remotely around the world,” Martin said. In adopting the Duo technology, “we have almost completely eliminated security breaches on our user accounts and greatly improved our ability to protect users from identity theft,” Martin said.

Security is the main goal of adding DUO however for some students it is seen as tedious. Adding another step to entering a student’s outlook can seem annoying at first, however when consider the security it ensures it is a small price to pay.

COVID Outbreak Hits Soccer Team Hardest

Tuesday, January 11th marked a unfortunate situation for the Northwood soccer program. That day began with breakfast and a routine all-school COVID test, but by dinnertime, ten soccer players were positive, effectively putting the U17 and U19 soccer teams on pause. A half dozen students were positive on the first day. A week later, twenty-two soccer players had tested positive.

In response, coaches canceled all trainings for a week while the student-athletes recovered in 5-day quarantines. Northwood’s health center worked tirelessly to insure each infected player who couldn’t go home had a safe space to quarantine whether that be on the on campus infirmary or in hotels located close by.
Thankfully, this outbreak didn’t force a pause of other athletic programs, which is remarkable considering almost 60% of the soccer program became infected in the first weeks of the new year. That’s not to say other parts of the school haven’t seen positive cases. In fact, approximately one-third of students and employees have tested positive since Christmas Eve.

The soccer team has recovered, after a long week of quarantining, things have returned to close to normal. The U19 team even won a tournament in Burlington VT the week after most of the team was released from isolation.

Winter Formal Includes Holiday Show at LPCA

Northwood kicked off a final week before the holiday break with a festive formal dinner followed by student performances at the Lake Placid Center for the Arts. These performances were led by the Northwood Dancers and other students willing to show off their talents.

The night started out with an excellent dinner put on by the Northwood kitchen staff that incorporated many classic holiday dishes including roast ham and great desserts. This was Northwood’s third formal dinner of the year and was a great way to celebrate a return to relative normalcy after there were no such dinners held last year due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

After the dinner students, packed into school buses and headed over to the Lake Placid Center For the Arts where there was an array of different talents on display. Students took the leap of faith to perform individual acts in front of the crowd of students, faculty and parents.

The highlight of the show was performances by the Northwood dance program that incorporated several different styles of dance. For many Northwood students, this was one of the first opportunity to see their classmates dance, and it was received with thunderous applause.

“This was a great chance to see some of my classmates hidden talents. Definitely my favorite formal of the year,” Calem Tommy ’22 said.  The dinner and show sent the Northwood community off into vacation on a positive note.

Soccer Team Has Strong Showing at Home Showcase

Northwood soccer opened competition on its new field with the first Northwood Boys soccer showcase. The showcase started November 11th with the boys U19 team defeating Immaculate Heart 1-0 in the 50 minute match. This was the first clean sheet of many for the older Husky boys who wouldn’t concede a single goal the whole showcase.

The following morning the U19 boys kept their momentum against St. Andrews College, a prep school from Toronto, securing a impressive 6-0 win. The younger Huskies joined the action first playing Burlington FC to a 1-1 draw with the lone goal from Sachiel Ming ’24.

Saturday concluded with a rival matchup between the U19s and High Mowing School, another Black Rock FC Academy.  The match was decided when senior Berhanu Stevens headed in the winning  goal that came from a sequence of quick passing. The Huskies kept their composure for the rest of the game, possessing the ball and not giving High Mowing many chances to tie the match.

The last day of competitions started with a quick turnaround for the U19s as they played NY Elite at 9:00 am and managed a 2-0 win.  Northwoods U18 team continued their weekend coming against Burlington FC that morning. The score ended 1-1 with the singular goal coming from sophomore Ming.  The older Huskies finished out their weekend playing RMPUS from near Montreal. The final match was scrappy and ended with the U19s winning 2-0. This ended a very solid weekend for the U19s as they kept 5 clean sheets and tallied a total of 12 goals against their opponents.

Humans of Northwood: Kyumin Shin ’22

“From I young age my passion has always been football. Being born in Seoul, South Korea I had the environment and opportunity to play high level football and play for good teams. Besides for sports I enjoy certain academics like science and mathematics. As a post Graduate student, I chose to come to Northwood after I learned about the Black Rock soccer program and met Coach Moodey. He did a great job explaining how attending Northwood could help me achieve my goals of becoming a Division I student-athlete. In my free time I like to sing and participate in the open mics offered at the Hub on Main Street.”

As told to Colter Cheney-Seymour ’22

Soccer Team Fares Well in Ohio

Boys soccer teams traveled to Ohio in October (October 22-24) to compete against other top prep schools in the Northeast.

On Thursday, October 21st both the U18 and U19 teams loaded onto a charter bus and set out for Ohio. The team made one stop on the way to their games taking a scenic route to Niagra Falls.  For many of the players, this was a first visit to the falls, and were astonished to hear stories of daredevils who went off the falls.

Upon arrival in Ohio on Friday, the Huskies watched an exciting matchup between two D1 programs Akron and Bowling Green. The match ended in a 5-1 win for Akron and gave many of the players a better understanding of soccer at the next level. Calem Tommy ’22 saw this as a great opportunity saying, “It’s important to see the next level in our football careers. It gave us motivation to make that next step.”

The prep showcase was hosted by Western Reserve Academy in Hudson, Ohio. Games started with the U19 boys playing Kiski School on Saturday morning and winning 3-1. Goals came from Kyumin Shin ’22, Junior Happi ’23 and Liam Doyle ’22. Sebastian Green’22 said the match was “a great response from the team after a prior winless weekend.”  The younger U18 team faced Lake Forest Academy Saturday evening, and that game ended in hard fought 2-4 defeat with goals from Saquiel Ming ’24 and Gonzales Munoz ’25.

The weekend continued with the U19s playing Western Reserve Academy on their home turf. The match ended with a 3-1 win for the Huskies. Two vital goals came from Happi and  one from Shin.  This marked a solid weekend for Junior Happi with 3 goals in two games.

Formal dinners have returned to Northwood with an excellent meal prepared by the kitchen staff that was followed by a Country & Western line dance. It was the first formal dinner since January 2020, when such events were discontinued due to the global pandemic.

The formal was held on Thursday, October 14 and was a mandatory event for all students. The dress code was suit and tie for the boys and the appropriate equivalent for the girls. The event kicked off with an explanation of the menu from Mr. Adam Fischer from the kitchen staff. The menu consisted of salad, chicken, shrimp and grits, steak and more. Mr. Stephen Reed shared a reflection about making new friends before students were allowed to the buffet.

The evening continued with line dancing led by dance instructor Ms. Mandi Maiore the co-leader of Northwood’s dance program. Students learned line and square dancing techniques and concluded the evening by dancing to the popular song “Cotton Eye Joe.”

“It was great to see what different food the cooking staff can offer. I also enjoyed dressing in my formal clothes and dancing with my friends,” Kyumin Shin ’22 said.

The school hopes to continue formal dinners throughout the year with one each month. Each formal will have a theme and often a related activity. The next formal dinner will be a Thanksgiving celebration to be held shortly before Thanksgiving break.

Open Mic Brings Student Performances to the Hub

Around 15 students gathered at the Hub on a recent Friday evening to attend the facility’s first Open Mic. Performances included everything from singing to comedy to short stories.  The event was organized by Mr. Adam Stewart, the school’s new music instructor.

“The open mic is a safe space for self-expression and creative risks,” Stewart said. “Events like these are great for our community to see the types of students we have and to recognize students for something besides athletics and academics,” Stewart added.

Students enjoyed this event and saw it as a chance to show their peers some of their hidden talents. “My favorite part was being able to watch everyone’s performances and having a very supportive environment,” Christie-Anne Nelson ‘23, who said her favorite performance was a story told by sophomore Ashley Guevara.
