March 22, 2019 – At a Girls’ Hockey team meeting yesterday morning, Dean of Students and Athletic Director Gino Riffle announced that Trevor Gilligan ‘03 would be the Head Girls’ Hockey coach for next season, taking over the team from Riffle who has coached Girls’ Hockey for the past two seasons.
Gilligan is currently the assistant for the Junior Team. In the meeting, Gilligan stated “I am truly honored to be named the Head Girls’ Hockey Coach at Northwood School. Having been a part of Northwood since I was a student in 2000 has allowed me to gain a deep understanding of what it means to be part of the Northwood family, and I look forward to continuing to build upon this legacy in my new role”.
Head of School Mr. MIchael Maher announced the news to the community later that day via email. His announcement stated:
“We are pleased to have Trevor make this professional change as he returns to the role of Head Coach, this time on the girls’ side,” Maher said. “Trevor is known for his work ethic, integrity, and dedication to the game. He understands the importance of the Northwood experience, because he lived it as a student — and his success coaching winning teams, recruiting, and helping student-athletes to grow and thrive speaks for itself.”
The news has brought excitement from many of the girls on the hockey team. Junior forward Margot Roquette said, “I’m really excited to have Coach Gilligan as our new coach because I’m going to get to work with him not only for hockey but for golf too!”
Rachel Hinkley ‘21 said “I think Gilly being the new coach will be a great opportunity for the girls’ hockey program. I want to thank Mr. Riffle for sticking with the girls the two years he coached the program. I’m so excited to have coach Gilligan as our coach and I can’t wait for the upcoming season.”
Mr. Riffle’s email to the parents said:
The appointment of Trevor is very exciting. He is a Northwood alum who has shown to be a tireless recruiter, role model and passionate coach of ice hockey. He will lean on [Assistant Coach] Leigh [Getz] to learn about the girls and the girls game. I am excited about the potential of this program and to watch the girls growth under Trevor and Leigh’s leadership…I want to take a few minutes to thank all of you for your support and confidence in myself and Leigh to help your daughter become a better hockey player, but more importantly a better person. I always appreciated their maturity and work ethic. I am so impressed with their growth this year and it has been a pleasure to have served as their coach”.
Gilligan will start his position at the end of the Tier 1 USA hockey Nationals in early April 2019.
