A week off is a long time in the hockey world. It’s enough time for your hands to turn to lead and your legs to lose their spring. Thanksgiving vacation is tough; The players need to the rest, but too much rest will make it harder to return to action. This year, the Huskies seemed to strike a good balance. Players returning from vacation were rejuvenated, but it was clear most of them had completed the off-ice training program as well. In their weekend competitions, they were as fast and strong as they’ve been all year.

Huskies Face Stiff Opponents on Busy Weekend

The North American Prep Hockey Association (NAPHA) consists of nine prep teams, spanning from Nova Scotia to Ohio. This weekend, the east teams, the McMaster Division, met in Stanstead, QC for opening weekend. Teams are always geared up for this weekend, as the points earned help overall standing and eventually playoff match-ups.

First Quarter Honor Rolls Announced

HonorRollNorthwood recently announced Honor Rolls for the first quarter of the 2015-16 school year. Thirty (30) students made Dean’s List, twenty (20) students are on High Honor Roll, twenty-three (23) students made Honor Roll, and fifty-three (53) earned Effort Honor Roll standing.

Fire on Ice Cools Down Hot Huskies

The Fire on Ice Tournament in Rochester, NY is a big event: over 160 girls teams ranging from ages 10-19, 17 different rinks, and dozens of college coaches. This year was the first for Northwood to enter two teams into the tournament, and both teams represented the school well with respectable showings. The Blue Team competed in the 19U division and the White Team competed in the 17U division.

Northwood White Works Their Way into First Place in the EJEPL

Northwood White got off to a slow start in their latest EJEPL weekend, but ended up getting the job done. They relied heavily on goaltender Olivia Skrillof to make some key saves to keep the game within reach early in the first game against Brewster Bulldogs.  Brewster cashed in on a breakaway opportunity late in the opening period to take a 1-0 lead.

Northwood White Turns Heads on Long Island

The White Team earned their first set of EJEPL points on Saturday afternoon with a 2-2 tie against the Buffalo Stars. White battled hard and came back strong after falling behind 0-2 after the first period. Early into the second period, Justine Dufresne scored first for the Huskies with help from Hannah Davis on the assist. Hannah Davis earned her second assist of the game halfway through the third period, as Kiannah Thomas redirected her shot from the high slot to tie up the game 2-2. After two five-minute overtime periods, 4v4 then 3v3, the game concluded with a tie. Olivia Skriloff was credited with 39 saves.

Blue Team Has Their Moments at Fall Foliage

The annual Fall Foliage Classic in Burlington, VT seems like the official start to the season. In the last three years, the Huskies have won the tournament, lost in the finals, and missed the finals by .5 point. The round robin format with period points always makes the tournament interesting, and this year was no different.

Parents’ Weekend

A the peak of fall foliage, Northwood School hosted its annual and long-awaited Parents’ Weekend.  For those who are unfamiliar with Parents’ Weekend, here’s a quick summary of the events that unfolded. 

On Friday, parents were greeted by students and faculty.  They then had the opportunity to sit in on their child’s classes, in order to gain insight into the quality of education offered at the school.  Whether parents observed Mr. Reed’s (aka “Reno”) AP Literature class, or Mrs. Walker’s AP Biology class, the general consensus was clear: Mr. H. Runyon’s class was the most entertaining, especially when he went off-topic (which let’s face it, probably happened frequently).  Most parents also had opportunities to speak with teachers, and discuss their child’s grades and classroom behavior.  That meant that your chances of getting that XBox for Christmas went down dramatically.   [Read more…]
