One ordinary afternoon in World Language, a soft bark carried out from the library office and broke the quiet. Heads turned, a few students smiled, and a small Pomeranian mix trotted into the spotlight. His name is Ted, and he belongs to librarian Ms. Sytske Martin. He will be five months old in October, and he has been making occasional appearances on campus.
“His name is Ted, he’ll be 5 months old in October, and he’s a Pomeranian mix,” Ms. Martin said. “He’s not on a regular schedule at school but loves to meet new people when he is in the library office.”
Students first noticed Ted during World Language with Ms. Odell. The class heard a bark from the library office and then saw the puppy that some students now recognize when they pass by the library. When Ted is in the office with Ms. Martin, people sometimes stop for a brief hello before heading to their next class.
Students say his visits stand out. Sasha Luhur ’27 remembers the first time she saw him. “I was sitting in the middle of World Language, doing my work, and we heard barking from Ms. Martin’s office. I looked over and there was this puppy,” Sasha said. “I spent basically the rest of the period playing with him. He is one of the cutest puppies I have ever seen, and he is really social compared to a lot of puppies I have met. He likes being around people, so it is nice to have him around because we all get to say hi. Now I even come in early to class to play with him.”
Ted’s appearances are tied to Ms. Martin’s schedule, and visits are not announced. If you’d like to say hello, please stop by the library office during the school day, ideally between classes or during a free period, and you might catch him. Ensure you arrive on time and do not miss class. Although the timing of his visits varies, it is apparent through the interviews that Ted enjoys meeting people, and students appreciate the opportunity to greet him.
