The Junior Team celebrates their win over Shattuck.

(January 13-15, 2017) In a battle of prep school hockey giants, the Northwood Junior Team topped Shattuck St. Mary’s (Minnesota) to kick off the Northwood Invitational Hockey Tournament.

In the first game of the Northwood Invitational the Huskies took on a Shattuck Saint Mary’s squad, ranked number one in the country for 18U, in front of a packed crowd. Northwood was trailing 1-0 going into the 3rd period but Aleksi Peltonen (Forward, 2017) got the Huskies on the board off a faceoff play in the offensive zone. After that the Husky offense got untracked and Wyatt Wilmshurst (Forward, 2017) buried a power play goal. Peltonen and Wilmshurst each tallied again to complete the 4-1 victory. Matt Petizian (2017) was a stellar in net from start to finish, recording 28 saves, including several crucial ones down the stretch.

In the second game the Huskies downed the Nichols School, as the offense exploded for seven goals. Erik Short (2017) picked up the win in net only allowing two.

In the third game of the weekend the Huskies took on Culver Military Academy, who is ranked number three for US 18U teams, and defeated them 3-0 behind a Matt Petizian shutout and goals from Pat Callahan (2) (Forward, 2018) and Sean Bunting (Forward, 2019).

Head Coach Chadd Cassidy said, “We couldn’t have been more proud of our team this past weekend. After battling back to win an emotional game against Shattuck, we were able to refocus and win our last two games against two quality opponents in Nichols and Culver. Hats off to our Seniors, led by Matthew Petizian who guided us all weekend long. It was a great showcase of exactly what Northwood Hockey is all about.”
