Athletes sometimes have a hard time staying on task when not in their team or school environment. Being away on a break can oftentimes take your mind off of what is most important in your sport for that short time away from your team and the goals at hand. But, the hockey players at Northwood never took their minds off their personal goals and their teams.
For most winter student-athletes, holiday break falls at the center of their busy season. Being away at school with the main focus being academic and athletic development means leaving campus or heading home can be a change. At Northwood, the hockey teams are on the ice and in the gym all week, building their strength and working toward the team’s growth. When the players go on break and become separated from the gritty in-house environment of Northwood, it’s no problem for them to take that drive and passion with them.
“Since we played at both the beginning and the end of winter break, I was only home for seven days. It was important to get rest while also staying in game shape. Body maintenance was at the forefront, but I also did a couple of light lifts and three long runs. This was not to beat the body down but to allow it to recover actively and not lose ground over the short break. I could also jump on the ice a few times,” said Pete Moore ‘25.
“I was on vacation for most of the break so being on the ice wasn’t much of an option. I love running and went on a run every day to stay in shape. I also spent some time in the gym preparing myself for a big January and the rest of the season!” said Penelope St-Pierre ‘27.
With a busy rest of the season ahead for all hockey teams at Northwood, they did a great job over break, continuing to put in the work to reach top potential for themselves and the teams.
