Coaches Casey Boone and Michael DiMascolo have joined Northwood School’s hockey program. Boone will assist Prep Head Coach Steve Mallaro, while DiMascolo will work alongside 16U Head Coach Justin Felhaber.
Boone is entering his eighth year of coaching. He previously worked at Hoosac School, Albany Academy and Hamilton College. He has also participated in USA Hockey state and national camps, where he connected with Mallaro.
“Coming here was the logical next step,” Boone said. “Knowing the program’s rich history and success over the last couple years, it was a great opportunity to work with Coach Mallaro, continue developing as a coach and work with the Prep hockey team.”
Boone said Northwood’s community made a positive impression on him when he arrived.
“Stepping onto campus in August, I immediately fell in love with the area,” Boone said. “The community, faculty and students have been incredibly welcoming. Everyone has been helping a lot, and it is just great to be part of a community like this.”
Boone has also been impressed by the team’s attitude on and off the ice.
“Getting out on the ice with the team has been fantastic,” Boone said. “The players bring great energy, maturity and a high-level mindset. Coming off last year’s Prep Hockey Conference championship, my expectations for this group are high. Hopefully, we can get healthy and just continue to get better every day in practice, and the sky’s the limit for this team this year.”
DiMascolo was born and raised in Cranston, Rhode Island. He attended St. George’s School and played two years of junior hockey before competing at the NCAA Division III level at Connecticut College. He graduated last spring after studying economics and finance. In addition to coaching, DiMascolo is teaching statistics at Northwood.
“I chose Northwood for its balance of a close and trusting community, strong academics and elite athletics,” DiMascolo said. “Having attended boarding school myself, I know the life-changing friendships and memories it creates, and my goal here is to help our students experience that same kind of personal growth.”
DiMascolo said he will emphasize development and accountability with the 16U team.
“My main expectation on the ice is effort and growth,” he said. “At the U16 level, development matters just as much as winning, and building good habits will serve these players far beyond hockey. Off the ice, I’m focused on building a culture where the guys trust one another, communicate openly and hold each other accountable.”
DiMascolo said balancing his new responsibilities has been challenging but rewarding.
“Teaching, coaching and adjusting to the fast pace of boarding school life has been a rewarding challenge, but I couldn’t ask for a better group of people to be surrounded by,” he said. “I’m excited to see what the rest of the year brings.”
