Devin Shakar ‘24 secured the Northwood Prep hockey team victorious wins with two outstanding shutouts. The Prep Hockey team traveled to Exeter, NH, to play in the Gamesheet Prep Cup under a standard tournament format (win and stay, lose and go to the loser bracket) on the weekend of January 6-7. The team scored a total of 9 goals, conceding 3 in only three games.
in the opening game of the tournament, the Huskies outperformed Dexter Southfield School in a 3-0 triumph, with Michael Peluso ‘25, Renaud Lalancette ‘24, and Tanner McFaul ‘24 all scoring a goal.
After recording the first shutout of the tournament, Shakar managed to record his second, this time against Culver Academy with a 2-0 win. Ritter Coombs ‘25 and Will Schneid ’25 recorded a goal each.
Shaker was happy with his team’s play. “I felt good going into the weekend after a well-rested break,” said starting goalie Devin Shakar. “Our team is very systematic. Stick to our game plan and play predictably. This allows us to be a unit on the ice.”
Finally, to conclude the Gamesheet Prep Cup as champions, the squad played the Championship in a hard-fought battle against Kimball Union Academy, resulting in a 4-3 victory with goals from Coombs, McFaul, and Jacob Brunton ‘24.
“A major part of it [the victory] is how the team played in front of me,” Shakar said. “It was mostly the other 23 guys that were playing. My job is to make the saves I should and maybe a couple more, but the guys made it easy for me.”
Shaker, who displayed great humility on and off the ice, help secure the team another cup with an exceptional two-shutout performance.
